About Waterboy
A closer look.
Your sport, your way. Waterboy helped people follow local and mainstream games, broadcast sports moments, comment, share photos and engage from the sideline or elsewhere.
In good company. The app was supported by a number of high profile sports personalities including Kees Meeuws, Ma'a Nonu, Tamati Ellison and former Wallaby George Smith.
Creating grassroots superstars. Users could start broadcasting a game (called a stream) directly from the sideline or the comfort of the couch.
Streams ranged from grass-roots games at the local pitch or stadium-packed matches across the world.
Feature rich. I was a co-founder of Sideline Junkies and designed and developed the entire iOS app. The app was packed with features, including browing and creating streams, notifications, user profiles, social integration, sharing, location services and more.
Goooaaal! Waterboy featured social integration, including crosposting live stream commentary to Facebook and Twitter, including photos.
Stream hosts could comment about specific goals which would update the scoreboard accordingly.
Join the club. The app supported profiles for clubs, allowing them to list all their past and upcoming games on Waterboy.
Entities in the app were linked in a graph, allowing users to explore related clubs, teams, locations and more.
Under the hood. Waterboy featured a custom API that provided real-time updates to various streams in progress.
It used Core Data and NSFetchedResultsController to track stream changes and sort browsable content.
Core Location was used efficiently to reduce battery drain while commenting from the sideline.
