Casebook

The episodic crime game series.

Casebook preview

Casebook is an episodic crime-game series built on Areograph technology. I joined as an intern and quickly moved into software development across minigames, engine work and testing.

About Casebook

A closer look.

In the beginning. I started as an intern developing minigames for Casebook and quickly took on software development work, implementing new features, maintaining the code base and supporting testing.

Localisation

Localisation. The team released a demo and three episodes through Mumbo Jumbo, Big Fish Games, Lace Mamba and Amazon Digital Download in multiple languages.

I directly worked on the Russian port of Casebook to support Cyrillic characters in the game engine.

Mad science

Mad science. One of the minigames I designed and built was an interactive chemistry set, complete with fluid simulation and particle effects. Players mix liquids and salts to derive a chemical composition, akin to Simon Says.

Tick tock

Tick tock. Another minigame I worked on was a clock puzzle. Players would deconstruct a clock using a blueprint to deduct the missing piece. The clock components would stop animating as more were removed.

Green thumbs

Green thumbs. Another minigame I developed involved reverse-engineering a watering contraption based on an example photo. The components were scattered at various orientation across the workbench which the user had to reassemble to solve the clue.

Jack of all trades

Jack of all trades. Beyond minigame design, I focused on bug fixes in the main game engine, implementing new features, testing and adding localisation support. My internship was sponsored by the Dunedin ICT Cluster Internship Programme, which was covered in the June 2009 edition of City Talk magazine.

Special edition. In total, I worked on the Casebook Demo, Episode I, Episode II, Episode III and the Trilogy Special Edition.

Casebook would go on to win a number of international accolades including the United Nations World Summit Award and the Adventure Gamers Best Independent Adventure award.
