About RefillNZ
A closer look.
RefillNZ is an award-winning, grass roots campaign to prevent plastic pollution by making it easier to refill your reusable water bottle on the go than buy water in a single-use plastic bottle.
Free water on the go. The app shows users where to find nearby water fountains and refill stations across New Zealand. RefillNZ is maintained by volunteers.
One of the biggest challenges to overcome was building an app that could parse thousands of data points without the use of an API.
Put your tap on the map. The app parses thousands of KML data points offline from data exported from the RefillNZ website. The formatted database is shipped with the app, ensuring instant display on startup.
Join the refillution. As part of the national campaign, the app promotes local businesses to join the movement by making their water available to the public.
The app supports an inline embedded Youtube campaign video powered by a WKWebView.
Bring your bottle. I used the UserNotifications framework to schedule bottle reminders locally.
The notifications are rescheduled in real-time as the user interacts with the UI.
Sign me up. I used Javascript hooks to restyle the existing web form to support local business sign-up without the need to build an API.
Through the years. I started my iOS career in 2011 building a product that could reveal free water locations around New Zealand.
When RefillNZ kicked off a national campaign in 2019, I volunteered to build them an iOS app to match their online map tool.
I maintain it to this day.
